At the time of the iOS 4 announcement, Steve Jobs mentioned that some features such as Multitasking and Wallpaper are not going to work on the iPhone 3G. This is most probably because of memory and CPU issues (the iPhone 4 has 512Mb, the iPhone 3Gs has a faster CPU than the 3G).
However, fear not my friends, as there is a simple workaround to get these nifty features to work on the iPhone 3G!
And a simple edit to the N82AP.plist file is all there is to it…

Simply Adding the following textvalues to the N82AP.plist (which resides in /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/) file will enable Multitasking and Wallpaper on your iPhone 3G:

If you’re not really comfy with doing this all by yourself, then hold on, we’re going over this step-by-step.

The jailbreak itself is easy, following the instructions from redsn0w just like jailbreaking the old iPhone OS3:

Download the redns0w 0.9.5 beta from here and download  iOS4.0 and iTunes 9.2 as described in this post: Installing iOS 4.0 on the iPhone

Then plug your iPhone into your Mac and turn it offcompletely  using the slider rather than just holding down the power button.

If you have iTunes open, close it, start up redsn0w and point it at the iPhone 3G iOS4b4 .IPSW file you downloaded as shown before. Next simply click through untill you reach the next stage.

The Redsn0w application will help you getting your iPhone in DFU mode and automatically jailbreak it.

When it’s finished, your iPhone 3G will automatically reboot. Make sure you’re still receiving cell signal, if not, you’ll have to restore and then re-jailbreak your iPhone, however this is unlikely at this stage.

Then, on your iPhone, open Cydia, which is just a white icon. It’ll do it’s re-ordering and then respring your device. After that, open Cydia again, and go to sources and input Saurik’s default repo as the new source:

http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7

Cydia will download the default sources and ask you to upgrade. Once that is done, Cydia will have it’s normal brown logo, which means you are now the official owner of a jailbroken, iPhone 3G running iOS4.

But, be honest now… the reason why you want to upgrade to iOS4.0 is not just the fancy folders, it’s the fancy background, and the multitaskting! Buggers… exactly those two things do not work on the iPhone 3G… But we CAN make them work!

Using multitasking and a wallpaper in iOS4 is simply controlled by a key entry in a plist file in the Springboard app. To enable these cool features,  you just need to add the above lines of code into the plist file and reboot your iPhone 3G.

Remember, if you’re not feeling comfortable with editing your plist files (you can think of them as the Windows Registry), it’s perhaps better to stop reading (or at least acting) here. If you’re not weak at heart, you can read and try on…

Editing your plist files can be done via SSH, or via iPhone Explorer. This tutorial uses iPhone Explorer.

Once you have installed iPhone Explorer, plug your iPhone 3G into your Mac, start iPhone Explorer and go to folder /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/

Find and copy the .plist file N82AP.plist to somewhere on your Mac. Next, make a backup of the plist file. Once this is done edit the file with your favourite texteditor (I use TextWrangler or Smultron to make two new entries into the .plist file under the capabilities key:

Once you added this, save the file and then copy it back to your iPhone, overwriting the original file. After that, disconnect your iPhone from your Mac, and reboot it. Should you not like your homescreen/multitasking hack, simply use iPhone explorer to put back the original file (which you backed up before) on your iPhone, and you’re all set again.[ad#r]

The biggest thing on the new iPhone OS, iOS 4.0 (yes indeed, the name changed from iPhone OS to iOS, most probably due to the iPad being added to the iFamily) is multitasking! Or, as Apple itself puts it: “Now you can run your favorite third-party apps – and switch between them instantly – without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.”1
Multitasking on the iPhone is something the whole iWorld has been waiting for. And finally it arrived!!!!
Or hasn’t it?
Did you also notice the “1″ after Apple’s multitasking statement? Yeah, it’s there for a reason. The iPhone’s multitasking is multitasking with a footnote. The footnote says “available with apps that have been developed to work with iOS 4.” This means that the great lifesaving app you use, that works great, but is never updated anymore since the developer is no longer working on it, will NOT benefit from multitasking on the iPhone…
Is that it? You say you can live with that? Nope, it’s not it… In fact, the iPhone always had multitasking, your email is being checked while you’re listening to the iPod app, or you can stay on the phone while checking your agenda. Multitasking was available only to the iPhone’s native apps. With the coming of iOS 4.0, this has changed, but only for specific kinds of applications: location data, voice over IP (VoIP), and audio. This means you will be able to stay on the phone via the Skype app (if they make a new version that is compatible with iOS 4.0, which I assume they certainly will do) while you are checking your email, or play a game of Need For Speed to fight the boredom of the phonecall. It means you will be able to hear the instructions of your GPS while reading an ebook on your iPhone and driving through traffic at 120 miles per hour. Perhaps not the most safe thing to do, but at those speeds everyone gets out of your way anyhow (Disclaimer: I am not promoting speeding! I am simply very fond of exagerations to make a point). It also means you will not be able to have Instapaper or your favourite RSS reader update itself in the background while you are reading in your newspaper app. So multitasking is a yes, but still with some remarks. However, things are improving already.
Another plus of iOS 4.0 is that apps will be able to remember where they left of. If you close an app, and reopen it again, it will be able to know where you where and what you were doing, so you can simply go on and continue your work or pleasure. Is that multitasking? No, it isn’t, but to many people this comes quite close to the most they’ve ever seen of multitasking, so I believe this is quite a good inbetween solution. Perhaps even a really good one, because, alot of people don’t really grasp multitasking, they don’t see that an app still running in the background, even if it isn’t really doing anything, is costing you memory and CPU time, and thus, basically, battery life. Apple has chosen for a path between functionality and battery life. And most probably, in the near future, they will be able to bring both those things nearer together, so that less concessions have to be made.

Do you want an early taste of what iOS 4.0 (the new name of Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0) has to offer?
Then follow these steps!
Be carefull, installing this version of iOS 4.0 is at your risk. This version is not yet the final version, but is a Gold Master Candidate, meaning that it is pretty near being the final version. This version is opened up for iPhone software developers, and can be installed without the need to register your UDID with Apple. Meaning, everyone can install it. Well, not everyone actually. To install iOS 4.0, you also need iTunes 9.2, and this is at this moment only available on Mac yet.

My findings
I’ve installed iOS 4.0 only a few hours ago, so I haven’t really had the time yet to fully test it. Besides that, although iOS 4.0 can also be installed on the older iPhone versions (2, 3G, 3GS), it may lack some features on some of those iPhones. One of the most interesting new features is Multitasking, which is not available on the iPhone 2G and 3G, same goes for the background picture on the springboard. What is available to all users, and is an incredible plus to my opinion, is folders on the homescreen. This means you can finally tidy up your iPhone’s homescreen, as you can see in the picture.

To install
Download and install iTunes 9.2 beta (links below). Once this is installed, and you have downloaded the new firmware (iOS 4.0) to your computer, connect your iPhone to your mac. For all safety, let it make a backup first! Once that is finished, select your iPhone in the left-hand bar in iTunes under devices, and go to the “summary” tab. Hold your “alt” key, and click on the “restore” button in iTunes. This will bring up a file select window, where you can point to the new firmware you’ve just downloaded (IPSW file). Now you’re iPhone will be restored with the new iOS 4.0. This process will take about 10-15 minutes.

With the launch of the new iPhone 4.0 Operating System (OS) scheduled for release, there is already excited speculation. IPhone manufacturer, Apple, is keeping tight-lipped about many of the alleged new features and has only gone into detail about a few, but they have claimed recently that the new 4.0 version will contain over 100 new end-user features. So what are these new features that Apple has disclosed?

What Apple has revealed about the iPhone 4.0 OS

This will not come as a shock, but Apple has boldly claimed that this new upgrade will be a big deal. A few months before the proposed release, it is time to bash the promotion drum and start dangling the carrot.

Apple is stating that the new 4.0 OS will offer more that 1500 new APIs for developers. The most interesting of these seems to be a new ability from the iPhone 4.0, for some apps to allow multitasking – albeit for specific purposes.

Multitasking with the iPhone 4.0 OS

Double-tapping the home button on the iPhone 4.0 will bring up an application switching tray. This tray shows active programs – like a dock for multitasking applications.

So you can now switch quickly between apps and not have to close one first, before opening another. The old app is simply suspended and waits silently in the background, ready to be used again. It is essentially frozen and therefore does not consume any valuable CPU power.

Other new features from the 4.0

• The new OS will now include folders, allowing a user to arrange applications into ordered files, by means of a simple drag-and-drop operation.
• Support for Bluetooth keyboards.
• Apple is making the e-reader application and iPad online bookstore available to the iPhone via the 4.0 OS. This will be scaled to fit the smaller screens.
• The ability to have mail from different email accounts dropped into one universal inbox.

As mentioned, Apple is not revealing too much right now but expect more “feature-leaks” as the release date approaches.

Some features that may not be so popular

• Adverts in applications – Apple has stated that the new OS will feature adverts in applications. These will be similar to those found in various web pages and search engine results. The likelihood is that they will take the form of apps within apps. This is great news for developers, who can agree to include these adverts within their apps and receive 60% of the revenue, but not necessarily good news for users.
• Backwards compatibility issues – If you own an iPhone 3G that was produced in 2009 and later then you will be fine. The iPhone 3G from 2008 can run the new 4.0 OS but will not be able to harness the new multitasking features. As of yet, there has been no official declaration as to whether non-3G, or previous, iPhones will be able to run the new OS, but it is doubtful.

More news to follow…

There are pros and cons to the new features of the 4.0 OS. Apple has so far only hinted at great things, but revealed very little. There is likely to be more announcements as the new OS nears its implementation date and though that has not been officially specified, it is thought to be in the coming months, as Apple usually brings out any new OS in June.

The iPhone is a great little machine, no doubt about that. But, it can be a core to change the looks of the iPhoneOS to your likings, especially if you want to change the background of the iPhone’s springboard (check out the end of this article for that).
The first, and definately most easy thing you can do to change your iPhone’s look is to change the background.
This can be done in two ways:
1 Via the settings menu:
Open the settings app, and choose “wallpaper”

This will bring you to an overview of all the images that are available on your iPhone. This means both the wallpaper collection of your iPhone as the photo’s you shot with your iPhone, the images you synced on to your iPhone, or the ones you saved from the web or email.
Select the image you want to use. This will bring you to the “Move and Scale” interface. Here you can zoom in on your picture to crop a part out of it, or to make it fit better. You can use both fingers to move and zoom, just like you’re used to on your iPhone. Adjust your picture until you like it, then tap “Set”, or “Cancel” if you want to select another picture.

2 Via the Photos app:
Open the Photos app, and select the picture you would like to use from your collection.
Tap the outside square icon on the lower left of your picture, and select “Use as Wallpaper”.[ad#r]
This will bring you back in the “Move and Scale” interface, where you can adjust your picture until you like it, then tap “Set Wallpaper”, or “Cancel” if you want to select another picture.

This will result in your chosen picture to be on the background of your iPhone’s lock screen.
Using this method, your wallpaper will only be visible when your iPhone is locked.

[ad]As seen before, personalizing the looks of your iPhone can be quite a pain. Luckily, Winterboard comes into play! Winterboard is a great little app that lets you customize the springboard (the place where you can select and start your apps) of your iPhone.
Winterboard allows you to change your icons, customize applications, add or change graphics in the status bar and dock, install themes, and change the wallpaper of your iphone’s springboard. It has quite some possibilities as you can see.
Winterboard works for 2.x+ iPhones and iPods, but needs you to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod to install Cydia.
Now, for this article, we’re going to limit ourselves to changing the springboard background of your iPhone with Winterboard.
First, you need to open Cydia, and select the “Sections” tab on the bottom.

Here you will see the “System” menu, enter that, and locate Winterboard.
Select Winterboard, and in the next screen, choose “Install” on the top right, and confirm that. This will download and install Winterboard on your iPhone, but needs a reboot of your phone to finish the install.

Once your iPhone has rebooted, you will see Winterboard happily sitting in your springboard next to the other apps.
Start up Winterboard to get an overview of all the available customizations.
Select “User Wallpaper” to select and change the wallpaper of the springboard to that of your choice. This will overwrite the current background or the theme background if you have any installed.
Select “Dim Wallpaper” if you want your background to dim a bit, so that your icons stand out more. Can be useful on very busy or colorful backgrounds.

First of all, what exactly is this jealbreak thing? Well, jailbreaking your iphone is actually hacking your iphone so it gets rid of the limitations set on it by Apple. The reason to do this is because the iPhone as apple created it has quite some flaws and restrictions, such as the inabillity to change the looks of the iPhone (icons, springboard background) or to multitask.
Jailbreaking your phone can solve these things, as you are then able to install apps and fixes via Cydia and Installer (the unofficial, jailbreak versions of Apple’s App Store). As you know, normally you are not able to install any software on your iPhone that doesn’t come from Apple’s App Store, and thus got Apple’s approvement. Jailbreaking your iPhone changes this, so your iPhone has no restrictions anymore. Do note that you always jailbreak your iPhone on your own responsability. iCan’t Internet is only giving you a way how you can do it, not telling you you should do it!

Pro’s of jailbreaking

- There are no limits anymore on your iPhone, the sky is almost the limit on your iphone.
- Unlock your iPhone from your current carrier. In many countries, the iPhone is locked to one specific carrier. If you want to switch, you need to jailbreak it first.
- Make a statement. If you want to make a statement against Apple’s way of controlling the iPhone thing, jailbreak your phone, and be part of a large underground movement.

Cons of jailbreaking

- An iPhone OS update via iTunes will disable your jailbreak. And most of the times Apple will have implemented a new way of stopping jailbreaks. This means you will have to wait untill hackers have found a new way of jailbreaking the iPhone.
- Virusses. There are only two virusses reported for the iPhone. And both of them only work on jailbroken iPhones. This is of course due to the approval process to get apps in the App Store.
- Warranty. The one thing you will lose for sure if you jailbreak is your warranty. Even if you need your warranty for something totally NOT related to the jailbreak, your warranty is gone byebye.
- Jailbreaking could break your iPhone. And I don’t mean the screen, but the software. However, this should normally be easily undone via a legit reinstall, and the chances to totally ruining your iPhone are very very slim.

The actual Jailbreaking

This tutorial is for jailbreaking an iPhone OS 3.1.2 Iphone 3G and iPhone 3GS. For other iPhone OS or iPhone/iPod version, check below!
First of all, download and install the BlacksnOw iPhone OS 3 Toolbar
[ad#r]Connect your iPhone to your computer and start the blackra1n application, then click the “make it ra1n” button.
Your iPhone will now go into recovery mode, and display the Geohot image (the developers of the jailbreak software). During the time your iPhone is in recovery mode, blackra1n is jailbreaking your phone.
Once blackra1n is finished, your iPhone will reboot. After that, the blackra1n icon will be on your springboard.
If you open blackra1n on your iPhone, you can select the packages you wish to install. Select Cydia (and if you want also the others), and click install.
When the installation is finished, reboot your iPhone.
Should you have WiFi problems after the reboot, go to Settings, select general, reset, and tap “Reset Network Settings”. That should do it.
Congratulations, you now have a fully jailbroken iPhone, and are ready for the fun!

Do you know that feeling when you hear a song on the radio that you really like, and you just don’t know which song it is? Or you hear that one song again that you remember from your childhood, but you never really knew the performer or the title? Well, fear no more, because Shazaam is coming to the rescue! Just start up Shazaam, let it listen to the song, and wait for it to come back with the performer of the song, the title, the album, and even a link to iTunes where you can buy the song!

To check the new software on Apple’s website, go here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

To update your iPhone (or iPod Touch) to OS 3.0, first make sure you are using iTunes 8 (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/). Connect your iPhone to your computer, and select your iPhone in iTunes. Then push the button “Check for update” in the summary pane. iTunes will start downloading the new software, and you iPhone will be upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0!
