The power of Adsense is that the ads are targeted at the content of your website, and thus, normally, at the interest of the viewer.
However, depending on your website setup, this can give some problems sometimes. For instance, if you have a photoblog, there isn’t much text for Adsense to see what topic your blog is about. Same goes for other sites that do not have alot of text, or where the real content can be overwhelmed by other content, such as comments, navigation, other ads etcetera.

Now, there is a solution to this problem, since you can suggest to Google Adsense which parts of your website you would like to have your ads targeted on. This is called section targeting.
The html code to put an emphasis on a certain part of your website is this:

Your content you want targeted goes here!

In fact, the code takes a parameter, weight, which you can set to “ignore” (standard it is set not to ignore, but to emphasize):

You can use this around the html code for your menu, or other advertisers.

The section targeting code can be used in a single page as much as you want. However, it must match the content of your site. If you use it to drive other topic (probably higher paying) ads to your site by targeting false keywords, you are working against the Google policy, and you could get your account closed.

[ad]Humans are very visually oriented, that is why, and this will not come as a surprise to you, your first impression counts. This goes for meeting someone of the opposite sex, but it definately goes for your website. On different levels even!
First of all it’s important that your website looks nice and clean, well structured, not messy (in my case, don’t make the website a copy of my desk: a complete mess with piles everywhere). Nobody likes to read and follow a website which looks like crap, with bad colors and bad navigation and layout.

The second level is in the same line. As you most probably already know, a great way to increase your AdSense earnings is to place multiple ad units on your webpages (if they have enough content that is). However, when doing this, keep this title in mind: of the first impression people get from your blog or website is that its only purpoise is to trick the visitor into clucking the ads, then you fail. Your visitors aren’t stupid. They don’t fall for that, and will most probably leave your blog again.

The third level where this title fits, is in the same line as the second level (but not the first, great thinking huh? ). If you have multiple adsense units on your website, google will place the ads that are best performing in the first ad unit that they encounter! They know it too, the first impressionis very important. And they don’t particularly want you to succeed, but they want to auuccees, so they help you in this way.

[ad#r]Now, what does this mean? Well, google puts the ad that has won the adwords auction, and thus has the highest payout per click, first in your ad units. This means that (watch out! Math part coming!) if you get this ad with the highest pyout for your page, to show up in the ad-unit that has the highest clickthrough rate for your page, you will get the maximum revenue possible for your page! However, there is a small pitfall to watch out for: the first ad-unit is not necessarily the first ad-unit that shows up on your page, but is the first ad-unit that shows up in your code. Depending on the layout and setup of your site, CDs can trick you, and the first ad-unit to show up in the code can even be the last ad-unit showing on your website. So a minimum of codediving is necessary here!

A remark often made by people just starting out with Google Adsense, is that they’ve had 120 Page Impressions, 21 clicks, and still their earnings is at 0,00$.

There are three possibilities

1. The click is considered as an invalid click

2. The click happened on the public service ads

3. The click is less than 1 cent

Now, let’s take a closer look at these three possibilities.

First, the clicks are considered as invalid. What does this mean? Well, if Google believes that the clicks you received are not legit clicks, made by real visitors on your website, and genuinely interested in the advertised product, Google will see it as an invalid click. This can be you, clicking your own ads. Your mother repeatedly clicking the ads on your website, a bunch of different people constantly coming from a suspicious site and clicking your ads (because you asked them to on that suspicious site) or any other situation which makes Google think they’re fraudulous.

Second, the click happened on a public service ad. When Google is unable to find ads relevant to your content, you have the choice to show a solid color, ads from another page (which you provide), or, and this is the standard option, which most users never change, public service ads are shown. To solve this problem, you can either implement other ads to be shown when Google cannot find relevant ads, but another, and much better solution, is to make sure that Google finds relevant ads.

When new content is put online, it is normal that Google cannot find relevant ads, and this can take anywhere between 10 minutes and 12 hours, untill Googles Adsense Bot drops by for a visit.

If your blog is brand new, or your blog covers a wide variety of topics which are not related to eachoter, Google will have no idea what your new content is about, and will show the public service ads. Whenever they are clicked, the click does show up in your stats, but the earnings for this click are 0$.

Third, the click earned you less than 0,1$. Due to the setup of the bidding system for Adwords ad placement, if there is little or no competition, the biddingfees will be very very low. This means that after deduction of Google’s part, there will only be a very small amount left for you. If you’ve been smartpriced (this term will be explained in an upcoming article), you will receive an even smaller part. This way, it is possible to receive clicks worth 0,1$, or less. Google does keep track of the low figures, and if you have enough of them, they will still show up.

The low earnings per click problem can be taken care of by increasing your earnings per click ratio. And the best way to do that is by targeting your keywords better. Check out which keywords have a high value, and write towards those keywords.

A whole lot of internet-marketing-gurus who are into AdSense will tell you that content is king, and that by having rich content on your Adsense sites you will gain more profit. This is of course very true. No content, no visitors, no adsense, no money, no food, no screaming babes waiting to go home with you. However, there are many secrets to increase your Adsense earnings.

[ad]But no… That’s not what I’m telling you. There are NO secrets to up you Adsense income! Nope, not one. All there is to know, has been shared already. And the real secrets, they’re only known to Google.
The only thing you should know about Adsense, is to experiment. Nothing else! There is no magic package to get rich. No secret setup, colorscheme, or ad-placement, that will guarantuee you to become rich on Adsense overnight.

What are the major ingredients for earning via adsense? Traffic, good ole, high quality traffic. Not bought traffic. Not a gazillion visitors that are hitting your homepage and leaving within 2 seconds. They only get your bouncerate to hit the ceiling. No, what you need it really targeted traffic. Get it via search engines through good SEO, get it via commenting on blogs and forums on your topic, or get it via any other way you can find in this tutorial, but get high quality traffic, even if you have to drag them down to your site! Guess what, do you want an Adsense secret? Well, here you have one: the CTR (Click Through Rate) of targeted traffic? Well, it’s higher! Who would’ve thought… But, the CTR of traffic coming from search engines seems to be even higher than of other traffic. And, to continue in our series of Search Engine Traffic and CTR, traffic coming from Bing (1,50%), seems to have a higher CTR than traffic coming from Google (0,97%) (which  has an even lower CTR than Yahoo! traffic (1.24%) (*Source: Chitika.com)).
Now that may not be a secret, but it sure is good info

Now, back to the original topic: Adsense secrets, and the one thing you should know: Experiment. Yes, I repeat: experiment!
[ad]Is your adsense income low? Try something new! What do you have to lose? If your earnings decrease even more, you change whatever you changed back to normal, and you should go back to your low earnings.
Now, what could you change? Try different colorschemes, blending in your ads more, or on the contrary, make them stand out more, experiment. Try different sizes of ads, try different placements.
But, do give your experiments time. Don’t go changing it back after 6 hours, or even 2 days. Give your experiments at least a week to be able to see and compare the results. Every hour of day, and every day of the week has its own clicking behaviour, so give it a full week to see if it makes a difference. The only reason to change back sooner is if you see your earnings take a dive towards the point of zero.

Adsense’s channels often seem intimidating to new adsense users, and many people do not see the use of them.
However, since knowledge is power, channels are the adsense equivalent of power. Channels can bring you insight in the performance of your different websites, ad-placements, colorschemes, ad-types, pages, and much more.

So how do you use these channels? How do you create them?

First, go to the Setup page in your adsense account. Then choose Channels -> Add channel.

Here you can choose a name for your channel. Best is to use a name that describes what your channel will measure. For instance, I always use an abbreviation of the website the channel will measure, followed by the specifications of the channel.

[ad]These specifications are what the channel will measure, so what you want to check out. Are you trying to compare two different ad-layouts? Then name your channels iCantLeaderbord and iCantBanner. Do you want to see which placement works best? Then use iCantLeftBlock and iCantRightBlock. Do you want to check out which works best, pages or post? Then use iCantPages and iCantPosts.

As you can see, the measurementpower of channels is immense, and its data can bright you alot of insight and wisdom. One of the best ways to increase your adsense earnings is to experiment. What is the use of experimenting when you cannot measure the effect of your experiments? None, indeed.

Adsense Channels allow you to experiment with your colorschemes, ad-placements, ad-types, and more, and it allows you to track and measure those experiments!

Now, channels of course have no use if you cannot attach them to your ads. You can attach your newly created channels to your ads while you are using the new-ad wizard, or by adjusting the settings of your ad afterwards.

You can select your new channel from the list, or you can search for it via the search-function (as shown).

If you wish to track multiple things at once, you can always attach more than one channel to a single ad, same as you can attach multiple ads to one single channel.

Now, with this newly aquired wisdom, go out to your Google Adsense Admin page, and experiment!

1. Hide text
Using the same colors, or low contrasting textcolors, hiding text behind images etcera, all these ways to put keywords in your pages without them being visible to your visitors are a definate nono. Google says me don’t like. And if Google says that, you’re out of the game.

2. Redirects and Multiple domainnames pointing to the same content
Redirecting is not a problem, if you’ve moved your content, put a 301 (permanent redirect) in place, and Google will transfer your ratings to the new place. The same goes for domainnames, if you have several domainnames that point to the same content, no problemo, just use the 301 redirect (or 302 redirect if it is a temporary redirect). However, it is recommended to forward no more than 5 different domainnames to the same site.
[ad]Frame forwarding (where you have an index.html file with a frame in it on the one domain, and this frame then loads a page somewhere else) and metadata forwards (where you say something like “This page has moved, please update your bookmarks and click here”, and then after 3 seconds or soe the page automatically reloads on the new address) are not done. Doing this will kill your ratings. And yes, really kill them, as in bang bang, I shot you down!

3. Duplicate content
Publishing duplicate content will not get you punished by Google. You are just punishing yourself with it! Duplicate content can be on your own site, as wel duplicated from other sites.
Ok, I see you frowning, some explanation: you content can be duplicated if you put the same text on different pages, or, if you have different urls pointing to the same content.

The most common example: http://www.icantinternet.org and http://icantinternet.org which give the same content, but are considered different urls by Google (yeah, I know). Solution, go to Google Webmaster Central, and set these two urls to point to the same (you can select your preferred url to use in Google).
As for the duplicate content from other sites, it’s easy, don’t do it. Don’t go around copy pasting other people’s content to your site. You may think it will help you, but it will only help these others, as they get rewarded for this by Google, and Google will not index your version of the duplicate content.

4. Affiliate content
Or content that you get from article directories. These offer no new content or value, and thus is useless. You could use it here and there inbetween as a filler, but it is best not to. Write your own content, or have it written for you, but make sure it is unique, fun to read and informative. Oh, and written for the readers, not the search engines. Search engines only index, they don’t like or dislike, you readers need to like reading your content.

5. Bad HTML
Being the webmaster, you need to make sure your html behaves. If not, bad html, must be punished!
Oops, sorry, writing style from another website (not ). But there’s a point in this, your the webmaster, make sure your html is well formatted, and according the standards. Google most probably doesn’t punish you for not following the standards (try running all PR4+ sites through the w3c checker, and have fun reading all the errors. You’ll know how to spend your evenings the next… 15 years or so). Don’t do it for Google, do it for the layout of your website, and do it for your readers.

6. Query strings in the URL
Google doesn’t get query strings. Google doesn’t like what it doesn’t get. There is something to say about that statement, I know. But the fact is, that query strings will not get you good grades. If you are using wordpress or some other package, use meaningful names, preferrably with the keywords for the page in the url. If you need to pass variables in the url, then try to connect the same pages as much as possible using the canonical link tag.

7. Keyword stuffing
Don’t go stuffing your title and first paragraph with your keywords. If you’re writing a page for a bakery, for the keyword bread, then do not start with “We sell bread, we have white bread, brown bread, corn bread, round bread, raisin bread, square bread, and other bread. Bread is what we sell.”. There are two reasons not to do this: First, your readers. They will see this, and not even try to read it. It’s obviously not intended for them, so they will leave your page. Second, for the search enginges. Search Engine Spiders are stupid, but smart as hell. They don’t mind that the majority of your site is unreadable (although, spiders are getting more and more intelligent, and they also start recognising well or non-well formed sentences), but they will count. And if they’re counting tells them that your keyword density is over 5%, they will know that this page is keywordstuffed, and not intended for your readers. Punished thy will be!

8. Duplicate Title and Meta Description tags
Face it, we all want to be different. Give your webpages the same privilege, let them be different. Give each one of them a different title, and a different description.

9. Keyword spamming
Don’t put keywords in your meta keyword or description tags that don’t appear in the page. Not always easy, since often you set your keywords and description meta tag fixed for the whole website or blog, and not every page is totally about those topics. But still… Give it a try.

10. JavaScript redirects and Other Cloaking
Showing your visitors something else than you are showing the Search Engine Spiders? Ouch… You think you can smart out the Google Brainiacs? Bad thinking. Better go flippin’ burgers, ’cause this song ain’t gonna last! Cloaking is an absolute nono. If Google catches you, your site is out of the rankings. Options? Flipping burgers, or buying a new domainname, and doing it right this time.

Et Voila, 10 SEO-things not to do. I hope you can all learn from them.
Say what? you’ve been bad? Really bad? You need to be punished? Ok, here’s an extra one, especially for you

11. Bogus Traffic
Don’t go out buying bogus traffic. You may think they won’t, but no worries, Google will definately see that your traffic suddenly increased from 25 visitors a day to 2000 a day. They will flag you, and it won’t be a nice flag! They will investigate, and if your traffic comes from the wrong places: punished, thy will be! (hey, you asked for it, right!).
No worries though. Google knows how StumbleUpon and the likes work. They won’t punish your for that.

[ad]Google’s Ad Planner is the tool that is used by advertisers to find sites related to what they advertise. Google’s brand new publisher center provides you, as an Adsense publisher the chance to have some say over what the advertisers see when they’re looking for sites to advertise on.

When you log in to the Ad Planner, you will need to claim your sites. You can do this via two ways: through Webmaster Tools or through the DoubleClick Directory interface. Once your sites are claimed (or if you already were using the Webmpaster Tools, you just need to select them), you can customize the description for your site, highlight the types of ads that you show (both the sizes and the media), choose the categories to which you believe your site belongs, and even share your Google Analytics data. This last option can be very interesting, especially if you have a higher traffic website or blog.

One of the most asked questions by people who are looking to start with Adsense, or have just started out with Adsense, are the money questions: What are the Google Adsense payout rates? How much will I earn?
I tried to bundle and answer a few of these questions, hoping that these will give you some insights in what the possibilities of Google Adsense are.

How much does Google Adsense pay you per month?
Your monthly income from Google Adsense depends on your earnings. Typically, Google will pay you the amount you earned the month before (so on april 31, they will pay what I earned during march). With this limitation, that they only payout if you earned over 100 USD. If you earned over 100USD, you will receive the full amount you earned. If you earned less than 100USD, you will receive nothing that month, but it will accumulate the next month, untill you earned 100USD.

How much can I earn with Google Adsense?
[ad]The sky is the limit. Really! If you have a great, very high traffic blog, and you have your Adsense tuned well, you can earn a 5 figure amount each month! However, this does mean you need to put alot of work in your website. You cannot just buy a domainname, install wordpress, copy some articles from ezarticles.com on it, and sit back and wait for visitors to roll in, while you’re watching babes and sipping cocktails. It doesn’t really work that way, you need to earn your visitors, you need to work to get them to your website, and you need to work to keep them coming back to it.

What is the Google Adsense payout rate?
How much of a click’s publisher cost goes to adsense, and how much to me? Well, nobody knows. This depends on numerous things, one of them being the score you have as an Adsense publisher. This score depends on your CTR and nr of visitors and such, and is part of the calculation. Nobody knows exactly how this score is calculated.

How much can I earn per day on Google Adsense?
Hard to say… But, to give you an average idea: per 100 unique visitors on your website, you can count on 0.5 to 1$ a day. How much it is exactly is impossible to say. It depends on numerous factors such as the topic of your website, the keywords you are targeting at, how well your websites is targetted at those keywords, how well you implemented your Adsense ads, how Adsense-blind your public is, the language your website is in, and so on and so on. How much does a click earn me on Google Adsense?
One single click can earn you anywhere between 0.01 and over 1.50$. How much you will actually earn depends on the keywords you are targetting. Some topics, and thus, keywords, will earn you a whole lot more than others. And, in the same topic, targetting a spefic keyword (or keywordcombination), can make a huge difference in earnings per click. For instance, if you take a look at mesothelioma for instance, you can find that mesothelioma pays you, as an example, 1$ per click. However, the combination mesothelioma attorney will pay you 1.20$, and mesothelioma lawyer can even pay you 1.50$!
