@Anna: Thanks for your usefull thoughts and additions Anna! I think you are right, only promoting things that you have tried yourself, and would recommend to friends is a good way of working!

Well on my marketing-related blog I have a general policy that I don't promote something I haven't bought, tried with, or somehow have faith in based on personal experience. For the most part I only promote things I have bought. Although, I do have enough experience for example with Yaro, that I would link to his coaching programs if appropriate - although though I haven't used the coaching programs I have read a lot of his stuff and applied it, and he has shown that his products and materials are useful and worthwhile. So he has earned my trust that way.

But in general I am very careful about only promoting things I would use myself and recommend to friends. I have sometimes had an affiliate link on my blog which I removed when I found the product to be faulty.

Another thing - I try to link to what will help my READERS the most, not just what will make money. I sometimes promote products that have no affiliate program attached. If I think they will help people.

One last point I could add applies to blogging. If you just promote product after product, no one will listen to you. Its important to provide useful or at least entertaining posts on a regular basis. When there is a proper balance, an occasional review or promotion is fine. People are also more likely to listen to you and read your review, if they have found your information to be useful, insightful, or even funny.

If they can relate to you they are more likely to listen to you. If you have honestly tried to help them, and succeeded at least to some degree, they are more likely to trust your recommendations and suggestions.
