Starting with Adsense

You cannot get by telling people only about the bad stuff, so, I don’t only tell people about Google and Adsense Scams, but I try to tell them also that Adsense DOES work, and give loads of tips and tricks to increase your adsense earnings and to get more links and traffic to your website.

And these posts are warmly welcomed it seems. However, fairly recently, I started to get alot of mails saying “yeah, ok, these Google Adsense Scams suck, and you tell me that Adsense on its own works well, and you even give apparently great tips to improve your Adsense earnings, but… How on earth do I even start earning with Adsense? Do I need a website? Do I need an account somewhere? Please help me step by step from the beginning!”

Now… what we could do here, is hit the delete-button, sighing “oh my whoever”, and go on surfing the net for other more or less welcome brainless timewaster-websites. Or, we can think about it, and acknowledge that at one time in the history of mankind, we ourselves were non-connaiseurs of the whole Adsense system. And we can then write a blogpost with step by step information for the newbies!

I decided to do the first!

And after I got bored with the beauty of mankind, I decided to skip to the latter, and write that info for you! Yes, that is for you, who came here on this blog in search of info on how to start earning your first pennies (yes, it won’t be much more than that in the beginning), with Google’s Adsense.

So, how do you get started earning with Adsense?

The short version (credit to Mr. I for his words of wisdom in the comments section of Google Scams):

1. Get a free website/blog.
2. Its very easy to set up blog and after that, you need to write (regularly) about anything you like.
3. Go to AdSense.com and log in with Google(GMail) account. Submit your blog(after writing some good articles on blog).
4. Once accepted, you can add ads to Blog from Layout –> Add Element –>AdSense.

The long version:

1. Get yourself a website. You can get a free website/blog at http://blogger.com, or various others (do check if they allow for Adsense to be published by users! Apparently http://wordpress.com doesn’t allow that). If you are serious about this whole earning money with your website thing, than invest a small amount of money, and buy a domainname and a small hostingpackage (http://www.godaddy.com is quite good and cheap for this). Make sure you can install wordpress on your webspace (php and mysql needed). Many webhosts offer Wordpress in their webhostingpackage already, ask them to find out. Regarding the domainname, try to have the keywords in the domainname for the subject your website/blog will be about.

2. Start writing articles for your blog. Make sure they have valuable content, and they are unique. Don’t just blindly copy content from other websites, you will not catch too many readers with it, and Google doesn’t like it either. Best thing is to blog about your own experience and knowledge. Therefor the easiest thing is to blog about something you like doing, or you are a fan of, or simply know alot about.

3. Once you’ve written a busload of articles, go to http://www.google.com/adsense, and register for an account.

4. When you are accepted for Adsense, you can put Adsense ads on your blog. If you are using blogger, follow the steps from the short version above. If you are using Wordpress, there are numerous plugins that can help you putting adsense on your blog, Adsense Manager being only one of them.

5. Don’t stop putting new high quality content on your blog, earning via adsense is not the same as being lazy, you need to constantly update your websites, or you will see a decrease in earning eventually.

6. Get out on the internet, and start gathering a whole, but I mean a whole lot of links, pointing to your blog. Make sure they point to your mainpage, as well as to individual posts (which is called deeplinking).

7. Try to get as much visitors to your website as you can, do this in any imageinable (but legal, and according to Google’s laws) way you can, even by putting a sticker with your URL on your car or on your forehead!

8. Read Adsense is math to fully understand why visitors are important, and how you can increase your earnings, and measure your adsense-details.

9. Create additional blogs with Adsense (once your account is approved, you can put Adsense on any website you own, as long as it is Adsense TOS compliant).

10. Link to this post from everywhere you can ;-)

Ok, I admit, that last one is not completely right, but I wanted to make it a nice round number :-)
Feel free to add or ask in the comments!

Hey, this sounds really great. I am new to all this but eager to learn and try. Im so sick of working retail and can’t find anything else…I was wondering however, Which one would you really recommend? Could I make just as much if I did do the short version? And as far as blogs, could it pertain to daily life? Or does it need to be more of how-tos and advice to specific things general ?…sorry just trying to get a better idea.

The squares are said to perform best, but experience tells me that it all depends on the layout of your website, the type of visitors you have (this website doesn’t work as well as some of my others, simply because the audience is more aware of adsense ads), the placement of your ads, and your color schemes.
But, in general, putting square ads in your text is a good place to start experimenting.

I too feel that the square format of ads match well with most of the outlay of web pages. Also, placement of ads stands very important in adsense.

Hard to put a number on it, since it all depends on your website, your implementation of the ads, your audience, your subject, etcetera… For instance, this website runs a little behind on CTR, since the majority of visitors are already working with Adsense, and know what it is.
As a rule of thumb, I always say you can count on 0,5-1$/ 100 unique visitors.

My appologies Rick, well, there are several ways to start getting links towards your website, and one of the most effective ways to do that is the one you already know, by posting comments on a blog of your interest. The same goes for forums, or submit your website to webdirectories, ask for linktrades, stuff like that. You can read more about links here: http://www.icantinternet.org/2008/12/more-on-linking/

Great post – well written and easy to understand for the uninitiated. I work in a Visa debit card dispute department for a bank and I see A LOT of people who get suckered by the “make money from Google” scams every day. Your post about the real honest truth about Adsense is a great public service. As you say, it doesn’t cost anything and can generate some revenue. I’m starting a weight loss blog and plan to use Adsense myself as part of a monetization strategy to help pay for my blogging hobby.

    Hey,

I was wondering if you knew of any other sites that for sure allow adsense.. Like a photography page maybe? I’m not much of a writer, so I don’t think I’d attract many people! But I’m a decent photographer, so if there was another type of site to use that was photography related perhaps, that would be great!

    • admin
      May 18, 2009 | 8:51 pm

      @Lizzie
The problem with photographyblogs (you can use blogger.com for that, or a selfhosted wordpress, or any site), is that they mostly do not have enough text on them for adsense to target their ads. You can give it a try though. If you notice that the ads are wrong, you can still add some text that will guide your adsense targetting. Another option is to use another ad network, such as Chitika (see right).

I am just reading through this site, for the first time. I think I will try this out. But first, I have a question…about the ads that are posted to getnerate hits. I am confused about what adsense wants to advertise. Can you please explain or provide a link to your own blogs, so that I can see how this all works? What are we advertising that is generating the money for Google?

    • admin
      June 9, 2009 | 6:57 am

@Colleen: Google selects the advertisers for you, you do not have to choose or select anything for this, just add their code to your website/blog, and off you go. Google’s Adsense will then base its ads on the content of your website. Compare for instance the ads on this website with the ads on http://www.sana-life.com and you will see that they are both targeted at the content of the page you are viewing. This exactly is the strength of Adsense. It ads value to your readers, by offering ads that are actually related to what your visitor is interested in.

Thanks for the post. ON my website, http://www.HomesByVanna.com (for some reason my website’s feed could not be found, so I am putting it in the body of the message). *I put the adsense HTML code and for some reason, the ads are on the bottom and they are small so no one can see them. Can you help me w/ this or tell me what I am doing wrong.

Also, if one has a website and it’s not sitting at the 1st page of google, it’s almost impossible to get visitors. What would you recommend?

@Monte: Yeah! Isn’t the internet great??? ;-) I have to admit, that I find it very weird, that Adsense allows ads that are abusing their own name and reputation… I guess these ads are being filtered out regularly, but often make it back inside. Ad-spamming…

  29. Tee
    June 25, 2009 | 8:37 pm

Quesion: in signing up for Adsense I have to put a business name in the Payee column. You say just develop a blogging site and after some blogs sign up…but it states that your company must have a bank account in the Payee’s name, not an individual’s name. How are you supposed to get around that? I have a business and a business website, but I dont have a bank account yet…..

If you’re recommending to people to just have a blog, that’s certainly not a business and there is no need to open a bank account…so what am i supposed to do now?

    • admin
      June 28, 2009 | 2:53 pm

Well, I just read through everything and this was an eye openning class for me. Please correct me if I got it wrong. Ok here I go. Ex. Using these blogs I’m not trying to sell anything. My main job is to get people interested in what I write. Google will put ads up on my blog that these people will click on; and when they do, I will get paid. So the more people I get to my blogs, the more money I’ll make. I’m not selling any product on the blogs, I’m just providing interesting information so they want to come back; and ultimately click on Google ads on my blogs. They really do not have to buy anything for me to get paid. All they have to do is click on the ads Google puts up on my site.
    (Do I have it right?)

    Thanks, Cliff

Hi. I still don’t see any figures in my adsense account. But, more than the money, this blogging thing is quite exciting. Refreshes the mind. I got accepted at ezine, btw. Thanks for that tip.

How do I exactly create a link to my post? I tried once and was redirected to a page that had my post title on it, underlined and in blue. What do I do about it? Should I add something? And, if I put the following here,

“Jane’s latest blog post: Our May-December Affair: How we are able to stay together”

will the clicker be redirected to my own blog site?

    Thanks!

    • admin
      July 15, 2009 | 2:52 pm

@Jane: Well, that’s a good thing, you need to be in it for the love of the blogging, or the web, or the topic you write about. Not be in it for the money. Make blogging your first goal, do it with love, and people will reward you for it.
As for the links, depends on which platform you use for your blog, most often, you need to type the words that you want to use as a link, and then select these words, click on the “link” icon (sometimes the words, sometimes a chain-symbol), and enter the address to where the text should link.
Let me know if it still doesn’t work.

Hi, How many blog articles should I post before I apply adsense? A minimum? Thanks.

    • admin
      November 2, 2009 | 3:16 pm

@Paul There is no minimum level or maximum level. I assume that the quality of your content counts for more than the quantity. Also make sure you already have a steady trafficflow before you apply. It doesn’t need to be 100’s of visitors, but a few daily visitors should be ok.

Thank you so much for this information. I know Google Adsense was real but was not sure how to go about it. Finally, I found your site and it has the best information out there. I am going to start right now. Wish me luck.

I dont have a website yet. I’m thinking I should carefully consider my subject/topic before desigining one? And then where do I go from there? Do I write articles about my subject/topic of choice and put them on my website? What do you mean by “some” good articles “on blog”? How many are “some”? And what do you mean by “on blog”? Yea… I’m not sure of much, except that I am determined to figure this out and make it happen! Even if it starts by asking remedial questions. So… after writing a “busload of articles” then go to go to http://www.google.com/adsense and register for an account…How long does it usually take to get accepted-assuming the information is high quality? What is the difference between using “blogger” and “wordpress”? I think I’ll stop there for now. Thank you!

Help! There is so much information that it is overwhelming! I followed your simple steps (above) and then I started reading adsense and webmaster tools, etc. Am I supposed to be able to find my website when I google it? I cannot! What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!

@Betty Dillingham Hey Betty, yes, you should be able to find your website when you google it, definately when you google for the exact name, but also when you google it for your keywords. It may take some time before Google indexes your website when it is new. A good way to increase the speed of indexing is getting plenty of inbound links towards your website (read more here: http://www.icantinternet.org/2009/06/6-steps-to-more-links-and-traffic/ ) and adding new content to your website regularly.
If you want to check up on the status of your website in Google, you need to open an account at http://www.google.com/webmasters . Here you will see the wizard to check if your website is indexed by Google or not, and which problems they possibly encountered.
Feel free to come back and ask more questions. The idea is not that the info STAYS overwhelming of course, so we’ll clear it up for you.

What does this mean and how do i fix it? Please advise!!!

    Crawl errors
Issues Google encountered when crawling your site.
    Web Mobile CHTML Mobile WML/XHTML
Show URLs: HTTP – In Sitemaps – Not followed – Not found – Restricted by robots.txt – Timed out – Unreachable
    URL Detail Detected
    No data available. (Why not?)

@bboop: It means that there is no data for the selected type of error. If all these (Show URLs: HTTP – In Sitemaps – Not followed – Not found – Restricted by robots.txt – Timed out – Unreachable) have a zero (0) behind it, it means that the Google Crawler (Googlebot) did not encounter errors. If there is a number behind it, it means that there were errors of that kind. Clicking the type of error will then give you more details about the url and the error.

Hi, I have never blogged before and I was just wondering if there is any material that I can read to help me better prepare myself to have a successful blog.

I was also wondering if there is any laws against publishing blogs on drug related topics.

Well, you can check on this website to learn some more about blogging… What specific questions do you have?
As for the drug related topics: if there is a law or not depends on the country you’re in I suppose. However, if you plan on using Adsense, then they will be the limiting factor I think. Google prohibits you to put adsense on sites that are about sex, drugs and rock& violence. So unless your blog is very clearly anti-drugs, I don’t think it would work.
